2024.6 Trip to Tonglu#

Originally planned to go to Guangzhou, but the flight was canceled due to heavy rain in the south. (Now the south is flooded with water)
We received the cancellation notice on Saturday afternoon and decided to go to Tonglu instead, leaving in the evening.

DAY1 Nature & Primitive Trip#

Daqi Mountain -> Maoping Village -> Shishe Village

Daqi Mountain#

On the first day, we visited the forest park and small villages in the mountains.
We took a taxi from the hotel (booked on the same day, non-refundable at 339 Orange Hotel) and arrived at Daqi Mountain Forest Park, which requires an entrance ticket.

As soon as we entered, it awakened my memory. I came here three years ago on a team building trip, just a few days apart.

Daqi Mountain has only one road up and down the mountain. The mountain is not high, but the scenery is good. There is a small stream where you can occasionally play in the water, which is quite pleasant.

There is a small waterfall at the top of the mountain, which is the main attraction.

We took our time and spent about two hours to descend the mountain.

When we were ready to take a taxi, we found that it was difficult to get one and many people were also trying to get a taxi. We decided to see if there was a bus, but found that it only runs every half an hour. We thought about walking out of the scenic area and taking a taxi outside (probably at least 20 minutes away).

But then we suddenly found shared bicycles (local to Tonglu) and quickly scanned the code to unlock them. Luckily, we were able to find available bikes before the group of people waiting for a taxi moved forward.

We rode the bikes for 4 kilometers and found a parking spot. After eating some local snacks and resting for a while, we took a taxi to Maoping Village.

Malin Ancient Road#

Of course, plans are always ideal. As soon as we reached the riverside, we found that it was a dead end...
Fortunately, my companion was agile and managed to find a way, leading us to the authentic Malin Ancient Road. However, for most of the journey, we couldn't see the river, only mountains on one side and cliffs blocked by trees on the other side. In general, there was hardly any difference in scenery during the one-hour walk...
Only occasionally, when we walked from one mountain to another, did we get a glimpse of the view, providing a brief relief for our tired minds and bodies.

Shishe Village#

Along the way, we found that Shishe Village was indeed crowded, mostly with self-driving tourists. It took us about ten minutes to walk from seeing Shishe Village to actually reaching it, and we finally arrived at the best viewing platform.

The river flows in a U-shape around the village, creating a beautiful scene.

We walked from the bridge on the left side of the picture to Shishe Village, where there were many places to eat, drink, and stay, as well as public restrooms.

At this time, it was hot and muggy in the afternoon, and it started to drizzle. We took shelter in a coffee shop and waited for the rain to stop. We also saw many people setting up chairs and sunshades in the slow-flowing water, enjoying their food and drinks, which was quite pleasant.

I would recommend bringing slippers if you come here, as there are many places to play in the water.

At around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, we started our journey back and took a taxi back to the hotel, which was relatively easy to find a taxi.

My suggestion is to take a taxi directly to Shishe Village, then walk to Maoping Village. If you have good physical strength, it's even better to go directly to Luci Village (the outermost village on this mountain road).

For more advanced adventurers, it's recommended to bring proper equipment and explore the mountains. There are many trails that can be taken, and the scenery is amazing if you can reach the top.

DAY2 OMG Thrill Park & Tianmu Creek Drifting#

It rained last night, and the weather forecast said it would continue to rain the next day, so we didn't buy tickets and planned to check the weather in the morning (in fact, you still need to book in advance, and tickets are non-refundable, missed the opportunity for cheap couple tickets).

The next morning, we received both good news and bad news.
The good news was that it stopped raining.
The bad news was that I felt pain in my elbow.

However, the pain wasn't too severe in the morning. After breakfast, we compared and found that taking the bus was more cost-effective. It didn't take much longer, but we could save a lot of money.

However, when we boarded the second bus, my companion had stomach pain and went to the bathroom, missing the bus. We didn't know when the next one would depart, so we ended up taking a taxi instead. 😂

OMG Thrill Park#

To be honest, this park is relatively expensive and has fewer attractions. It's also quite far away.
The only interesting attractions are:

  • Glass Suspension Bridge
  • Scooter
  • Glass Drifting
There's also a swing that I dare not go on, even if it's open.

First, we took a boat from the cave to the mountains, then arrived at Banshanyi, and took an elevator up the mountain from one side. We first arrived at the glass suspension bridge.
This glass suspension bridge is quite good, very long.

After coming over, we took another elevator up the mountain and arrived at a glass platform, which is suitable for taking photos.

Next, we rested at a coffee shop and tried the scooter, which we were looking forward to.

Note that each attraction can only be experienced once. You can't go back and do it again. This is something I find disappointing, and each attraction is quite short, lasting only a few minutes.

The scooter was quite fun, but I couldn't film with one hand because it was easy to be overtaken. I also had to use the brakes on the turns, or else I would flip over (I saw someone flip over).

At this time, we returned to Banshanyi at noon and had some food. We took another "horse" up the mountain from the other side and arrived at the glass drifting area. They provided disposable raincoats, and we drifted down the mountain in a bamboo raft, passing through some children's areas and souvenir shops, and finally arrived at the entrance.

So you see, there are not many attractions, and if you don't take breaks and there aren't many people, you can finish all the attractions in an hour. There are only Yulin Wonderland (cave) and Tianmu Creek Drifting (bamboo rafting) nearby. There's nothing else, so you need to plan your itinerary wisely.

Tianmu Creek#

It's relatively close, about a ten-minute taxi ride away. There were very few people, so I recommend buying tickets in advance, as you can only enter 30 minutes later.

We happened to miss a group of team-building tourists and shared a bamboo raft with another couple.

It was windy, the sun wasn't too strong, and it was very pleasant.

Afterword#

I would recommend the main attraction in Tonglu to be the drifting experience, as the temperature was not high enough when we visited, combined with cloudy weather, it wasn't suitable for experiencing the thrilling drifts in Tonglu.

Also, it's important to plan well, as the various attractions are quite far apart.

Injuries#

Last Sunday night, I unexpectedly suffered an injury.
Soft tissue damage in the elbow area of my right arm, with swelling and unbearable pain, making it difficult to perform larger movements.

And there could be many possibilities, it feels like a combination of various factors:

  • I usually have a fitness routine, which may have strained the muscles in this area (but there was no obvious pain or discomfort)
  • Played basketball for two days during the Dragon Boat Festival
  • Went hiking on Sunday, which was quite exhausting (but I didn't use my arms much)
  • Pressed on it while sleeping

In short, I woke up in pain on Sunday night and played all day on Monday, and the swelling increased.
On Tuesday, I went to the hospital in Shanghai in the morning, and the doctor said there was no problem with the bones, and told me to heal on my own...

On Tuesday night, the pain was too severe, and I could only fall asleep after taking ibuprofen.
The swelling also turned red, indicating that there was blood inside.

In conclusion,
I need to pause all intense exercise and fitness activities for the next month.

The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!)#

Key Takeaways#

  1. Introduction

Joel Spolsky proposed the idea of there being no such thing as plain text twenty years ago, emphasizing the importance of string encoding.
In 2003, the main issue was determining the encoding of text, but by 2023, UTF-8 has become the dominant encoding.
2. Introduction to Unicode

Unicode is a standard aimed at unifying all past and present human languages and enabling them to be used with computers.
In practice, Unicode is a table that assigns unique numbers, called code points, to different characters.
By reaching a global consensus on the correspondence between characters and code points and using Unicode, people can read each other's text.
3. The Scale of Unicode

Currently, the largest code point defined in Unicode is 0x10FFFF.
4. The Shift in Problems

The current problem is no longer determining the encoding of text, but rather how to use UTF-8 correctly.
5. Additional Information

The article also mentions some characters in Unicode and their corresponding code points as examples, including Latin letters, Arabic letters, Katakana letters, musical symbols, and emoticons.

Summary#

From what I understand, Asian people get it much worse: many Chinese, Japanese, and Korean logograms that are written very differently get assigned the same code point:
亚洲程序员最痛苦之一,尤其是如果你的用户可能是整个泛亚太区域。
